I participated to/led  several national and international projects, among which the most prominent are:

Intentional dumping of polluting substances and illegal disposal of hazardous waste are examples of organised environmental crime, which can be challenging to detect and difficult to investigate. The EU-funded PERIVALLON project will combat organised environmental crime by developing innovative tools and solutions for detecting and preventing such activities as well as improving international cooperation. The project will leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, geospatial intelligence, remote sensing and online monitoring to provide enhanced investigation processes and methodologies. Moreover, it will provide a comprehensive intelligence picture of environmental crime in Europe through its Environmental Crime Observatory. The capacity of end users, including police authorities and border guards, will also be improved by innovative training curricula and field tests.

The PRECEPT Project


Energy consumption in buildings has been decreasing since 2008, mainly due to efforts observed in the residential sector and policy measures, as well as higher energy prices and the recession. The deployment and operation of proactive residential buildings will soon become yet another reason. The EU-funded PRECEPT project will facilitate the smooth and almost zero operational costs transformation of conventional residential buildings into highly efficient proactive residential buildings. It is tapping into this new framework and is proposing a Pred(scr)ictive and Proactive Building Energy Management System (PP-BMS). By making buildings smarter as regards energy management systems, the project will develop new sustainable business models for transforming traditional reactive buildings into proactive buildings.

The SODALITE Project


Computer application developers and infrastructure operators are always searching for new tools to improve their performance. The EU-funded SODALITE project will supply tools for developers and infrastructure operators that abstract their applications and infrastructure requirements to facilitate simpler and faster development and operation and execution of diverse applications over diverse software-defined, high-performance cloud infrastructures. It will generate a model-based abstraction library and develop a design and programming model for full-stack application and infrastructure descriptions. It will also establish a deployment framework, enabling static optimisation of the so-abstracted applications onto specific infrastructures, and automated run-time optimisation and management of applications. SODALITE will support the digital transformation of the European industry by enhancing the design and effectiveness of software-defined infrastructures and simplicity of modelling applications.

The enCompass Project


The enCOMPASS H2020 project will implement and validate an integrated socio-technical approach to behavioural change for energy saving, by developing innovative user-friendly digital tools to make energy consumption data available and understandable for different stakeholders (residents, visitors, public actors, building managers, utilities and ICT-providers) so to empower them to achieve energy savings and manage their needs in energy efficient, cost-effective and comfortable ways. To this end, enCOMPASS will integrate visualisation of energy data collected from smart sensors, user-generated information and context-aware collaborative recommendations for energy saving, intelligent control and adaptive gamified incentives.

The PENNY Project


The project aims at improving our understanding on behavioural mechanisms in energy efficiency, following an
interdisciplinary and broad behavioural science approach. The project will provide an empirical and numerical assessment of the psychological, social, economic and financial factors that influence energy efficiency in the residential and industry sectors By paring with energy utilities and retailers in different European countries, the project will conduct scientific experiments (A/B testing) which will enhance the design of policies aiming at maximizing energy efficient behaviors. The project will use novel data from different European countries to take into consideration institutional and political factors. The project will analyze consumers’ behavior related to the consumption of energy, the investment in energy efficient products, as well as the renovation of buildings. Finally, ex ante assessment will be executed using improved energy economy models, which will generate quantitative information with regard to expected impacts of EU and global policies.

The Proactive Project


The project aims to design, implement and test a new  approach to homeland security that combines the traditional measures of the Public Admministratio with telecommunications technology of the latest generation (4G Heterogeneous Network, Small Cells) and with the use of social networks as tools for monitoring and warning the population.

The SmartH2O Project


The SmartH2O project, funded by the EC under the FP7,  develops an ICT platform for improving the management of urban and peri-urban water demand thanks to the integrated use of smart meters, social computation, and dynamic water pricing, based on advanced models of consumer behavior.
Information and communication technologies (ICT) can help transition to a more sustainable water management, but a purely technical solution cannot work in the area of water supply, a complex socio-technical system. Water consumers are people whose behavior depends on a variety of motivations and social and individual drivers and triggers. SmartH2O will develop a framework able to consider both the technical and the social sides of the problem and promote the active engagement of the consumers with the shared objective of saving water and energy.

The Automobile Project


The AutoMobile project, funded by the EC under the FP7, Research For SMEs call,  aims at designing and bringing to the market innovative methodologies, software tools, and vertical applications for the cost-effective implementation of cross-platform, multi-device mobile applications, i.e. business applications that can be accessed by users on a variety of devices and operating systems, including PC, cellular / smart phones and tablets. The CUBRIK Project

The CUBRIK project is a 36 month large-scale Integrating Project partially funded by the European Commission’s 7th Framework ICT Programme for Research and Technological Development. The project is driven by its four global objectives: 1)advance SoTA in the multimedia search domain, especially in the areas of content enrichment, query processing, and relevance feedback, with the help of open source components and pipelines for search-driven applications. 2) Putting humans in the loop, by empowering multimedia search with an innovative networked human computation framework that combines the conventionally segregated areas of user behavior analysis, crowdsourcing, social network and trust analysis and gaming with a purpose. 3) Opening the search box by enabling component-based development of tailor-made multimedia search applications. 4) Starting-up a multimedia search business ecosystem. The consortium consists of 15 partners from across Europe bringing complementary expertise.

The BPM4People Project

The BPM4People project aims at designing and bringing to the market innovative methodologies, software tools, and vertical applications for the implementation of Social Business Process Management (Social BPM), i.e., processes collaboratively defined and collaboratively executed by organizations and their stakeholders (employees, customers, citizens).
